It seems as though our replacements in D2, South Shore, have decided to conserve all of their resources for the Fall and cried off for this coming weekend. Indeed, they were so scared of playing us that they managed to come up with a whole list of excuses as to why the couldn't play the game.
Firstly, they have been "officially denied the use of our field in Marshfield and may be in jeopardy of not getting it back any time soon". So, not getting it back is in jeopardy? Jesus, where did these guys learn English, from Old Gold? Nevertheless, you can probably feel some sympathy for any club at the mercy of the faceless Marshfield beaurocrats. Better get that sorted by the Fall though boys, or it's going to be a real short visit to D2.
No matter, why don't they come up and play us here in Maine? Well, it turns out they "will not be able to get a full side to travel if that was even an option as more than half of our "A" side is currently injured and a lot of our players do not have the means to spend another weekend in a hotel or even travelling".
Where do I begin?
Since when has cancelling the game if you don't have a full A side been an option? Jeez, we wouldn't have played a game last Fall if we cancelled every time we didn't have a full A side. If numbers are that thin, then they're all going to get really fit playing two games every weekend this Fall.
Still I'm sure they were all worn out after travelling the 60 or so miles from Marshfield to Newport last weekend. Boy, that kind of a trip would really take it out of you, so why not crash for the night in the hotel, rather than face that 60 minute ride home. Gosh, with that kind of road (in)tolerance, they were probably planning on spending the whole week up in Maine to acclimatize themselves for our match.
Let's face it South Shore - you're going to have to toughen up a bit to make it in D2, or at least get someone with a bit of imagination to make up your excuses.

Newport Heroics
Rather than write a second-hand account of last weekend, and pretend like I was there, I thought I'd just reprint Fred's account and take the liberty of inserting a bit of punctuation, and correcting his spelling....
Hello All,
Big thanks to everyone for A great weekend of rugby. As always we had to play Newport in the morning, same old thing right?
I guess someone forgot to tell all the new guys to lie down and accept defeat! Oh yea, the veterans that made the trip have such terrible memories they seemed to forget as well. Halftime found us down by a try and feeling very confident. Though we
were not able to defeat the # 1 seed, everyone came away from that game asking themselves, "are those guys really moving down a division?", or as our young import from Ireland put it, "Do you think we could schedule another with these guys before summer?"
Newport went on to win the whole thing with much less effort than it took to beat us. We then went on to play Springfield at 4:00. Thank god we had 5 hours to rest after that long ride and game! Once we finally got our kit on we were determined to make things happen. Springfield never had a chance. If it were not for a couple mistakes and some inexperience I truly believe they would have stopped the game! Big win big problem! do we Camp or hotel for the night. My predictions for good
weather were coming true all around us. We even went as far as calling upon our New York affiliate to see what conditions were on the way.
With all this evidence and a sunburn beginning to appear on young Davy's, I mean Deano's face we remained divided. After a heated session of parlamint I was able to convince half the group, which was just as well because we only had rooms for
half anyway and the numbers were HUGE like Andys tent! I can't tell you much about the Hotel scene but let's face it , if you've seen one you've seen them all. Once we were finished lying to the deskclerk about how tired we were and how we would definetly be sleeping before quiet time, Jay Willey dropped his crumpled stack of cash on the counter and we absconded with every stick of wood in Portsmouth (Should this be Newport? - Ed.). Again the masses were convinced it could
not be done but we did burn the large pile next to my large tent (36 sq ft to be exact) in it's entirety. We also began to see shimmers of greatness from Ed( weekend MvP) in more ways than even Sybil could explain.
Once we showed up at the field it became apparent that Tim would be washing the jerseys for the remainder of his days in Portland and that our untested sub in the backs would be at center stage. Ed stepped up big as Providence repeadedly kicked
the ball at him and as we could all see experience isn't everything. That game was a battle and in not so typical fashion we battled back to within a try and conversion before they blew it up. 4th place does not tell the story and after Old Gold was dismantled by Newport in the final we left the sunny skies of Newport and returned to the great state of Raine (geddit? - Ed.). Big weekend for Portland is an understatement and if you can't understand half the story I guess you will just have to make it next year. There's plenty of room in my tent! right Nellie?
