To paraphrase Mark Twain, the wettest Winter I ever spent was Spring in Maine. This Sautrday promises more of the wet stuff, so rather than end up with a handful of drowned rats at Higgins Beach, the club has laid on some cozy digs at the Portland Sports Center (aka Turfs, aka Jokers) to keep you nice and warm.
Get your directions here, and get your arse over there at 12:30pm on Saturday. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, indoor time costs a bloody fortune, so make sure you're there to take advantage of it. Not to mention the fact that we've got a game in just one week, so those of you in a permanent vegitative state had better get in the habit of getting out of the house on a Saturday afternoon. That goes for you Old Boys too. (Jesus, did I just say that? Somebody stop me).
As if that weren't incentive enough for you to get out, there's a bar attached, so we can all grab a pint and listen to how great you used to be, back in the day.

A penny for your thoughts....
...well, twenty-thousand of them actually.
For those of you that have made it out to practice so far this year, I've no doubt you're aware of the amount of money the club has spent on your behalf. Getting a roof and lights over your head doesn't come cheap, and in case your parents didn't already point this out to you, money doesn't grow on trees either. OK, you probably know where I'm going with this...
58 cents a day doesn't get you much. A newspaper, a donut maybe or a can of soda or beer. OK, well maybe a can of beer would be OK, but just one a day? Come on!
$4.06 a week will get you one of those skinny-double-mocha-soy-lattes you like so much, let you send a handful of shady text messages or get you a Happy Meal.
$16.66 a month doesn't quite get you a subsription to a porn site (so I've been told), won't come close to paying your phone bill and barely gives you half a tank of gas.
For the same price you can (and probably already do) enjoy the company of a colorful cross-section of society, get some exercise, tour New England and be tested both mentally and physically on a regular basis. Even if you're a new player, who technically doesn't have to cough up any scratch yet, think about what your getting, and lend some support. As for the rest of you who haven't paid...I don't know how you sleep nights.
Set the record straight and give 'til it hurts, here.

Percocet - where is thy sting?
Hat’s off to Wales for completing the Grand Slam this weekend, after a convincing win against the plucky Irish boys. Having ridden on England’s coat-tails for several months following their World Cup triumph, it is time for me to reveal my true Welsh heritage and jump on that bandwagon for a while. Cymreag dros Gymru, as my old man used to say when he got back from working in the mines. Well boys, there’ll be a welcome in the hillside for a while yet…..until they start loosing and I have to bust out my old Irish granny. But don’t worry too much, I’m never going to admit to any French relatives, no matter how good their team gets!
Of course my joy for Wales was tempered somewhat by the four new holes in my head where my wisdom teeth used to be. They had been put there just the day before by a man who had insisted that they needed to come out, even though they weren’t hurting. Had I known how much it was going to suck I might have put up a bit more of a fight, but I was lured in by the promise of Percocet and all the ice cream I could eat.
Well, as it turned out, I couldn’t eat that much ice cream, and the Percocet was a big disappointment. Having never taken anything much stronger than Nyquil, I was excited at the possibility of spending theweekend strung out on a controlled substance, while at the same time receiving sympathy from my loved ones. Well, I might be taking it wrong, but the Percocet just made want to lie down, and was about as effective in managing the pain as a shot of Baby Motrin. Strangely though I barely had enough energy to reach for the Ibuprofen before taking another four-hour
nap. Anyway, I have reserved my intake of “Daddy’s little helpers” to bedtime, and it is usually good until 3 am, when I am awoken again by the throbbing in my head. Still, that leaves me plenty of pills to sell you after each game…..
Practice will be on again this Wednesday night, in beautiful suburban Gorham. 9am to the wee small hours. Less than three weeks to the firstgame, and there are a lot of old faces still absent. It's not that I miss you or anything.
FDA Warning – Percocet is a prescription medication for the treatment of moderate-to-severe pain in adults. You should not take Percocet if you are hoping to hallucinate or do anything other than lie around on the couch all day. If you have a history of alcoholism or just popping any pill you can lay your hands on, Percocet may not be right for you. Consult a doctor, or the voices in your head before, before taking Percocet when offered to you.
Percocet can be habit forming; do not abruptly stop taking it Percocet if you have been taking it for several days. This may lead to withdrawal symptoms and sociopathic behaviour. Avoid alcohol while taking Percocet; you may spill some.
Side effects of taking Percocet can include slow, weak breathing; hyperventilation; seizures; cold, clammy skin; hot, dry skin; severe weakness or dizziness; unconsciousness; consciousness; yellowing of the skin or eyes; webbing of the feet; unusual bleeding or bruising the following day; dry mouth; a dry sense of humor; dry martini; constipation; “beer goggles”; sweating; feminine itching; unexplained pregnancy; “soiling”; decreased sex drive; decreased opportunity for sex; unemployment; scrum pox; nausea; vomiting; more nausea; narcolepsy; insomnia; megalomania; decreased finances; breast growth; hair loss.

Springfield Bottle Boys
We'll lads, no sooner had Springfield thrown down the gauntlet to pick up where we left off last season, than they though better of it and yanked the fixture, citing some nonsense about the city not letting them use the pitch. But really, come on boys, it wouldn't be a very good start to their sesaon to get knocked off by a D3 side, would it? I guess we'll have to save that for NERFU.
So, with Springfield chosing discretion over valor, that means we have just three weeks before we start the season with Amoskeag, who will no doubt prove to me more worthy opponents. We have 3 fixtures that day, so if you can bring your mum too, that's going to help.

Training & New Fixture
For those of you that operate on the periphery of the club, you might not be aware that training for the Spring season has been underway for months, and that turnout has been high, with competition expected for many spots. So if you're thinking that you can perform your usual walk-on 20 minute heroics followed by total meltdown, then save it for the B-side. Failing that, there's three training sessions left for you to make your presence felt before our first fixture. Two more Wednesday nights and a Saturday at the beach stand between you and our first fixture. Training at Gorham Sports Center will be at the usual time, and we'll be adding in a session this Saturday at Higgins beach at 1pm. Directions to the beach have be posted on the home page.
Speaking of fixtures, we've added a late (or early, depending on your perspective) match for March 26th, against our old friends, Springfield. For those of you that played in the Fall, I'm sure you're hoping to settle the score. For those of you who didn't, this will be a good chance to sample what we'll be in for at NERFU this Spring.
