While I was busy with the blender, the rest of the boys made the trip down to North Shore this weekend, and came away with their first win of the season. And not just any win - a decisive 47-7 victory over our new D3 league-mates.
From everything I hear it was a forwards-run affair, with Hannes and Francis picking up a couple of tires each. I'm sure a couple of other people must have scored, but I'm not sure who. My scouting report also indicates that the backline benefited from a few more experienced players, giving everyone a chance to focus on the basics.
That's about all I do know, so if anyone wants to write a full match report, I'd be happy to post it. Other than that you'll just have to make do with these pictures and let your imagination run wild.

North Shore Directions
Kick Off for the North Shore match tomorrow is 12:30pm, so that means a 9:30am departure from the Park&Ride (on Marginal Way, opposite the Portland Rock Gym). Be there a little earlier if you want to socialize with your teammates or to score a sweet ride with someone else.

Portland Duds
For those of you who didn't make it to the College Tourney this weekend, it's now possible for you to pretend that you did by slipping in to this slinky, black number and telling all the girls (or guys) that you made the All-Star team. Now, if only you could do something about all that grey hair and the extra 30lbs., that story might actually be convincing.
Anyway, whatever your motivation, these shirts are available for purchase through the club website, with proceeds going directly to the club coffers. For a mere $10 you can come and get one of the shirts yourself at the Deli, at practice or at one of our games. But for $20 you're in for a real treat, since Jay will come and personally deliver it to your house, place of work, classroom or correctional facility. If you're really good, he may even sign it for you.
As you can see, this is a quality shirt, made from finest cotton, and assembled in one of Kathy-Lee's finest sweatshops. The whole shirt has a distinct AC DC-vibe, with a play on their lyrics helping to introducing the participating sides on the reverse. Worcester Sauce
I was scouring the Worcester web page looking for some inspiration for the match report, but all I could figure out was that they had lost track of who had scored, and were looking to piece the game together by way of their message board.
Ten tries pretty much tells the story, and all in their favor. Clearly Worcester is at the top of their game right now, having won NERFU D1 in the Fall, opened their Spring season by winning the Savannah St. Patricks Day tournament, and kicking off their D1 National Playoff campaign next weekend. In the context of all that, the Portland effort was a little more respectable, making the visitors break a sweat during thier romp. As usual, Portland contested a lot of the set piece ball with vigor, but the differences were all too apparant when play became less structured, and the crisp passing of the entire Worcester side opened things up.
The last two weeks have illustrated that modern rugby has less to do with set pieces for either forwards or backs, and has more to do with a sides ability to quickly re-align itself and distribute the ball effectively. Modern rugby defense rarely gives up tries on the first phase, or even the second, so it becomes imperative to retain posession, and attacking options through the third, fourth, fifth phase and beyond. It ultimately makes for a much more frenetic and athletic game, but one that seems to produce points.
OK, enough of the soap box, this weekend, in addition to the college tournament, Portland are hosting Seacoast; some genuine D3 opposition. After two stern tests, hopefully this provides an opportunity for our boys to open the scoring account, and who knows where that might lead.
